Sexual cannibalism in a praying mantis (note that the larger female has consumed the head of the smaller male).

What’s going on in this photo?  My daughter Leah found this pair of praying mantids in our garden.  Note that the larger female has consumed the head of the smaller male (an example of the famous sexual cannibalism that can occur in this species).  Amazingly, the decapitated male continued to cling to the female and even attempt to re-initiate copulation several times.
